We're glad that you're considering Syracuse University! Below are the requirements you will need to complete to be considered for admission as an international graduate applicant.

English Proficiency

If your native language is not English, you may be required to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS test (International English Language Testing Service). See the program requirements list for your program (located in the application) for more information. Syracuse University is also home to the English Language Institute, which offers English training to those at all levels of proficiency, including graduate.

Academic Credentials

You will need to submit one copy of records for all previous post-secondary education. You can do this by contacting the Registrar’s Office of each higher education institution that you have attended, and asking to have one copy of your transcript(s) sent to Syracuse University. All offers of admission from Syracuse University are conditional, pending the receipt of these official academic credentials. Your academic credentials confirm that you have been awarded a U.S. bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

Before having documents sent, please ensure that:

  1. All original transcripts are translated to English, and notarized by each Registrar’s Office.
  2. The document(s) bear the appropriate signatures and seal of the institution that issued it.
  3. Your documents must be received by Syracuse University in a sealed envelope directly from that institution.

If you have any questions about credentials, please contact grad@syr.edu or 315.443.4492.

Funding Requirements

The U.S. government requires international students to demonstrate sufficient funding for at least the first year of graduate study. Once you’ve done this, we can issue the visa eligibility document that you’ll need in order to have your student visa authorized.
