Application Checklist for First-Year Students

Use this checklist if you will be an incoming first-year student, and currently attend high school in the United States (or if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident and studying outside the U.S.).

1.

Review our enrollment options and application deadlines.

Prospective students have three enrollment options to choose from. After deciding on an enrollment plan, it is important to review application deadlines because they differ depending on your program and enrollment option of choice. 


2.

Choose a program of study

If you haven't already, check out our list of majors. You may apply to several of the schools and colleges as undecided.


3.

Complete the Online Common Application


4.

Pay the application Fee ($85*)

*If you are eligible for an application fee waiver, you will be able to indicate this on the Common Application.


5.

Submit your official secondary school transcript


6.

Submit your senior year grade report


7.

Submit your standardized test scores, SAT or ACT (if you wish)

Fall 2021 note: Given the extraordinary circumstances facing high school students and families due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SAT/ACT scores will not be required for students applying for fall 2021 admission. Students who are unable to submit test scores, or who choose not to, will not be disadvantaged and will remain eligible for merit scholarships. Please read the full details surrounding this update here.

Have your school counselor submit your secondary school counselor evaluation


9.

Submit two academic recommendations


10.

Check to see if your college requires any additional materials


11.

If required, submit your portfolio or audition

Required for applicants to the School of Architecture or College of Visual and Performing Arts programs in art and design, drama, or music.


For Early Decision Applicants Only

If you will be applying to Syracuse University under Early Decision or Early Decision II, then you must complete and submit the Early Decision Agreement through the Common Application or complete the ED Agreement [PDF, 56KB] and submit by mail, fax to 315.443.3423, or email to orange@syr.edu. As an ED candidate, you agree to enroll at Syracuse University if admitted to your preferred college. You may apply to other colleges and universities through regular decision, with the understanding that you will withdraw these applications if admitted to Syracuse University.


For Discovery Program Applicants Only

If you are applying to the College of Arts and Sciences | Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs or the College of Engineering and Computer Science and wish to be considered for the Discovery Florence, Madrid, or Strasbourg first-semester study abroad programs, you must indicate this on the Common Application. Due to visa application requirements, students applying to a Discovery Program for the fall 2020 semester must be at least 18 years of age by July 1, 2020.
