If you have received conditional admission, you must provide additional information in order to receive full admission to Syracuse University.

Please refer to your decision letter to determine whether your offer of admission is pending proof of English proficiency, proof of financial support, or both.

Once you have fulfilled the condition(s), you will be eligible for full admission and we will send your official admission papers and appropriate immigration documents. We cannot guarantee that space will still be available at the time the conditions are met. Therefore, it is in your best interest to send this material as soon as possible in order to secure a place in your program of admission.

If you have provided financial documents prior to conditional admission, you have been considered for merit scholarships. Please consider outside scholarships for which you may qualify and/or contact our office to discuss your situation further.

If you have not submitted your financial documentation, you will be considered for merit scholarships once received.

Please note that it may take up to 5-7 business days for documents to be processed and added to your application.

Note: This page is not an indication of conditional admission to the University. All students are officially notified by electronic and standard mail.

Proof of Financial Support

Acceptable proof of financial support for students applying for an F-1 visa is required. You will need to show sufficient funds to meet your first-year expenses at Syracuse University per the University's current estimate of $89,581 for the 2023-24 academic year. The estimated cost of attendance for the 2024-25 academic year will be finalized in Spring 2024.

Please note the following:

  • For privately or personally sponsored applicants, acceptable proof of finances may be a bank statement or signed letter of support from a bank that states the account holdings meet the minimum total cost of attendance to fund your first-year expenses at Syracuse University.
  • It is not necessary for the bank statement to show the amount in U.S. dollars; however, the currency does need to be clearly indicated.
  • The certified bank statement need not show the total amount of funds in the account. Rather, it must state that the account has at least $89,581.
  • The print date of the statement must be valid within one year of the start of the semester. If you are enrolling for the Fall 2024 semester, statements must be dated within one year of Aug. 26, 2024.
  • All financial documents must be written in English or translated into English.
  • A statement of income or earnings or tax return forms do not constitute proof of sufficient funds.
  • Government-sponsored applicants must submit a certified copy of the award letter that includes the U.S. dollar amount of the award per year, the duration of the award, and a list of expenses covered by the award.

Please submit the Visa/Financial Support Information Form (found in your applicant portal) along with a bank statement or letter indicating proof of liquid funds. Photocopies of financial documentation are acceptable. Please include a copy of your passport with the financial documents that you upload. Be sure to write your name, date of birth, and name of the program to which you are applying on all documents that you upload.

Scholarship Recipients

If you received a Syracuse University scholarship or an outside scholarship, the amount needed to demonstrate sufficient funds for the purposes of receiving an I-20 will be the difference between the estimated cost of attendance of $89,581 and the amount of your scholarship(s).

Proof of English Proficiency

If you have been conditionally admitted for English proficiency, it was either because:

  • You have not met the required composite score for your college of admission.
  • You have met the composite score but not met the subscore requirements set by the University.

You may fulfill the English proficiency condition by enrolling in the English Language Institute (E.L.I.) or by submitting a score from one of the following English language proficiency exams:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • TOEFL At Home
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English)
  • Duolingo English Test (DET)

English proficiency exam score reports must be sent directly to the University from the testing service.

Use ID code 2823 when requesting your official TOEFL scores from ETS.

Please note that Syracuse University does not accept:

  • TOEFL Essentials or ITP exam
  • TOEFL My Best Score
  • IELTS Indicator

Please refer to the table on our International Requirements webpage for preferred English proficiency scores.
