Health and Exercise Science B.S.

About this Program

  • Gain a strong foundation to succeed through coursework, field experience and participation in nationally recognized faculty research in exercise physiology and applied physiology.
  • Work toward a number of professional certifications, such as those offered by the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
  • Be part of a cohort of top candidates for careers in sports medicine, exercise physiology, sports psychology, medicine, athletic administration and physical therapy.
  • Earn a bachelor’s degree and a physical therapy doctoral degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in six years through the 3+3 DPT program.
  • Students have the option to join the Exercise Science Living Learning Community.

The health and exercise science major is supported by a variety of real-world learning opportunities with skilled professionals eager to help develop student interns.

  • Gain insight and experience in related areas such as physical therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, research and so much more to prepare you for graduate school or career of your choice.
  • Intern on campus with one of the many D1 athletics programs, in a research faculty lab, at a nearby hospital or one of many other local organizations.
  • Shadow physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength coaches, researchers, sport coaches, athletic administrators and dietitians.
  • Build professional skills through collaboration and networking with organizations and experts working in the field.

Study Abroad

Ranked among the top 25 international education providers in the U.S., the Syracuse Abroad program has more than 100 programs in 60 countries, with nearly half of all students going abroad during their four years. 

Health and exercise science majors commonly go abroad to Syracuse centers in London, England, and Madrid, Spain, and to partner programs at University College Dublin, the University of New South Wales and the University of Queensland.

Summer programs of interest may include South Africa Immersion: A Global Health Education Experience; Mount Everest Base Camp Trek: The Human Response to High Altitude; and Drug Policy and Harm Reduction in Global Perspective (Vancouver).
