Curriculum
Selected studies in education majors choose one of five focus areas, many of which can include a fast-track to a master’s degree.
One of five focus areas will guide your classes, internships, projects and other opportunities throughout your program.
- Cultural Foundations of American Schooling: Schooling and Diversity: Learn the theory and practice of culture, race, class, gender and other issues as they intersect with education. Opportunity for a fast-track master’s degree in cultural foundations of education.
- Pre-Teaching: Study of Teaching, Learning, and Inclusion: Learn about teaching and student learning in early childhood, elementary and/or secondary education, with an emphasis on diversity, disability and inclusion in schools.
- Education, Technology, and Media: Learn about integration of technology and media into education and other places where learning happens, including media literacy. Opportunity for a fast-track master’s in instructional design, development and evaluation.
- Post-Secondary and Human Services Fields: Learn about fields such as higher education, counseling, student affairs and international education, and non-teaching education roles, with an emphasis on social services’ impact on individuals, families and communities. Opportunity for a fast-track master’s in clinical mental health counseling or school counseling.
- Physical Activity: Sport, Coaching, and Recreation: Learn about leading physical activities for individuals and groups with an emphasis on adapting for athletes with and without disabilities.
Extracurricular Opportunities
Experience the World
Take part in School of Education short-term study abroad trips or semester programs around the world. School of Education students are eligible for exclusive funding to support study abroad experiences.
Kappa Delta Pi
Join the student-led Alpha Delta Iota chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education for professional development, fellowship and service opportunities.
Spector/Warren Fellowship
This fellowship brings students interested in education to the Holocaust Museum Houston each year, where they learn from experts, firsthand accounts and survivors, gaining the tools to integrate the lessons on the Holocaust and human rights into any classroom subject.
