Curriculum
The nutrition program includes coursework in:
- Sciences: chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.
- Food: safety, science, systems and meal management.
Students also study nutrition in the health and lifespan, clinical nutrition therapy, community nutrition, nutrition education and counseling.
The Department of Nutrition and Food Studies offers two bachelor of science (B.S.) degrees. In the Nutrition B.S. (Dietetics), students prepare to work in a variety of health and health promotion fields, many as registered dietitians. In the Nutrition Science B.S., students study the biological and physical sciences to prepare for postgraduate work in medicine, dentistry, education or health care, or to work for major food or pharmaceutical companies.

Study Abroad

Nutrition science and dietetics students most often go abroad to Syracuse’s centers in Florence, Italy; London, England; and Madrid, Spain. Students have also studied at World Partner programs CEA Prague; SIT India: Public Health, Gender, and Community Action; and the University of Queensland.
Summer programs of interest may include South Africa Immersion: A Global Health Education Experience; and Mediterranean Food and Culture: An Italian Experience (Florence).
