Carol Stevens '77, print editor of USA Today, will visit Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Tuesday, March 29. She will meet with students in a one-on-one session at 3 p.m. in the Career Development Center, 313 Newhouse 3. She will also tour the Newhouse Complex and meet with classes.
As print editor, Stevens oversees the production of USA Today, including the news, money, sports and life sections. She also oversees the production of other print products, including bonus sections and special editions on topics including the 50th anniversary of JFK’s election and the centennial of Ronald Reagan’s birth.
Previously, Stevens served as managing editor for the news section. She first joined USA Today in 1982 as a national reporter. She has held several other positions with the paper, including editorial writer, deputy editorial page editor and editorial page editor.
She also worked as a reporter for the Detroit News, an assistant editorial page editor at the Baltimore Sun, Washington editor for Medical Economics magazine, contributor to Washingtonian magazine and reporter and local columnist for the Buffalo Courier-Express.
She has won awards, including “Best of Gannett” (1993) for black/white health differences, and was a runner up in the National Magazine Awards for a Washingtonian article “Why Women Get Bad Health Care” (1993). She is a member of Gridiron, a Washington journalism organization, and the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
Stevens is a summa cum laude graduate of SU with degrees in broadcast journalism from the Newhouse School and international relations from The College of Arts & Sciences, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
