SyracuseCoE Symposium 2010 presents 'Restoring Sustainable, Healthy Communities' Sept. 27-28

On Monday, Sept. 27, and Tuesday, Sept. 28, the Syracuse Center of Excellence (SyracuseCoE) will host its 10th annual symposium, SyracuseCoE Symposium 2010, at the Oncenter in Syracuse. The theme is “Restoring Sustainable, Healthy Communities.”

In advance of the symposium, the University Lectures series at Syracuse University will present “Green the Ghetto and How Much It Won’t Cost Us,” a lecture by MacArthur “Genius” Award-winning green economic strategist and television and radio host Majora Carter, on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. This event is co-sponsored by SyracuseCoE as a kick-off to SyracuseCoE Symposium 2010.

Highlights of the symposium include keynote speakers and presentations:

• Kate Gordon, vice president for energy policy with the Center for American Progress , presenting“Creating Jobs Through Investments in a Clean Energy Economy;”
• Matt Millea, deputy county executive for physical services for Onondaga County, presenting “Onondaga County Green Infrastructure Program;”
• Jared Snyder, assistant commissioner for air resources, climate change and energy, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, presenting “New York State’s Climate Action Plan;” and 
• Gerald Stokes, associate laboratory director for global and regional solutions, National Laboratory, presenting “New York’s Climate Action Plan’s 80×50 Scenario Analysis.”

Other speakers and presentations include:

• Frank Cetera, green business advisor in the small business development center at Onondaga Community College, presenting “Syracuse Green Business Certification Program;”
• Samuel Chu, director of the Long Island Green Homes Program; 
• Cliff Davidson, Thomas and Colleen Wilmot Professor in SU’s L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), presenting ”Reengineering to Establish Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods;”
• Charles Driscoll, University Professor of Environmental Systems Engineering in LCS;
• John Folan, T. David Fitz-Gibbon Professor of Architecture and director of the Urban Design Build Studio at Carnegie Mellon University;
• Liv Haselbach, associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Washington State University;
• Phil Hopke, Bayard D. Clarkson Distinguished Professor and director of CARES at Clarkson University, presenting “Mediating Indoor Air with HEPAiRx;”
• Kevin Stack, president of Northeast Green Building Consulting, presenting on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Builder’s Challenge and the Ecological Assessment of Buildings; and 
• Anne Spaulding, senior environmental specialist for the City of Rochester, presenting on the “Energy Efficiency Revolving Loan Fund for Businesses.”

The Environmental Finance Center at SU will present the Technical Assistance Partnership Forum, on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m.-noon. The forum will feature Dave Miller, program director for rural development with the United States Departrment of Agriculture (USDA); Matthew Driscoll, president and CEO of the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation; and Kyle Wilber, municipal management consultant with the New York State Department of State, and more.
