Tired of snow? Suffering from cabin fever? Snap out of the cold weather doldrums at Winter Carnival, an annual celebration of chilly and spirited fun on the Syracuse University campus Feb. 24-28.
The festivities begin on Feb. 24 with the Winter Carnival Kickoff at 9 a.m. at the corner of Comstock and Euclid avenues and the front patio of the Schine Student Center. Start your day with free hot chocolate, then check out winter-themed dinners and karaoke contests in the Brockway, Ernie Davis, Graham, Sadler, Shaw and Goldstein Student Center dining centers. Later, the Traditions Commission and University Union will host the first “SU’s Best Dance Crew” contest at 7 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium of the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. Tickets for the show are currently available at the Schine Box Office.
Winter Carnival Days kick into full gear with a collection for the National Orange Day literacy project, snacks, arts and crafts, and entertainment. These events take place Feb. 25 and 26 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Schine Student Center and Feb. 26 from 5-7 p.m. at the Goldstein Student Center on South Campus.
The annual Chili Cook-off, showcasing the culinary talents of faculty, staff and students, will take place Feb. 25 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the patio of Huntington Beard Crouse Hall. Stop by for free chili tasting and meet the guest judges.
A number of athletic competitions will take place throughout the festival, including the Orange Relay Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. on the Quad; broom ball and human bowling Feb. 26 at 9 p.m. at the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion on South Campus, followed by Open Skate Night; and the Human Dog Sled Race on Feb. 27 at noon in Walnut Park.
Other scheduled events include the Winter Carnival Game Show, “Can You Name That Tune?” Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in Grant Auditorium; Glow-in-the-Dark Skate on Feb. 24 from 9 p.m.-midnight at the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion (with free hot chocolate and cookies); the Winter Carnival Biggest Fan competition at the SU vs. Villanova men’s basketball game on Feb. 28 at 8 p.m.in the Carrier Dome; and the M.E.I.S.A. Battle of the Bands on Feb. 28 in the Schine Student Center Underground (free tickets are currently available at the Schine Box Office).
