Wondering what it means to be sustainable? “Sustainability: What Does it Mean for My Business?” offers answers for individuals and business owners looking for easy ways to put sustainability practices in place. The one-time class will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the South Side Innovation Center, 2610 S. Salina St., Syracuse. It is open to the public.
The cost to attend is $10 per person, $5 with a Syracuse University I.D., and free for clients of Start-Up NY and the Entrepreneurial Assistance Program.
The class offers a non-technical overview of sustainability and why it’s important. The interactive session will focus on simple methods and resources available to help reduce consumption, reuse items instead of trashing them, and recycle more responsibly. From energy, transportation and resource conservation to healthy living, participants will learn what it means to be sustainable, as well as simple and rewarding ways to reduce costs at home and in the workplace.
“Sustainability: What Does it Mean for My Business?” will be presented by Syracuse University Sustainability Division staff members Steve Lloyd, associate director for sustainability, and Melissa Cadwell, marketing manager. Lloyd is a certified sustainability development professional accredited by the Association of Energy Engineers. He has worked on building operations, energy programs and conservation for the past 30 years. Cadwell has been with SU since 1987 and is responsible for coordinating, creating and implementing the Sustainability Division’s marketing and communication projects.

The South Side Innovation Center is an inner city business incubator. Located in a modern facility on Syracuse’s South Side, SSIC provides office space and equipment for new ventures to be created and to grow. It serves as a small-business resource center, hosting training programs, providing advice on individual business plans, and offering access to mentors and professional contacts in an energized environment of entrepreneurial activity.
