Students in the Syracuse University College of Human Ecology’s Department of Sport Management will host a fundraiser to support the Special Olympics on April 28-29 at Carousel Center’s Uno Chicago Grill.
Organized by students in the “Sport Event Sponsorship” (SPM 324) course, the activity will raise funds to support the Special Olympics Weedsport Aquatics Event.

Uno Chicago Grill patrons who present the coupon at the Carousel Center location on April 28 or 29 (for dine-in or takeout service) will have 20 percent of their bill, excluding tax and tip, donated to the Special Olympics New York-Central Region.
In addition to driving participation in the “dough-raiser,” sport management students will hold raffles and promote guest appearances by local celebrities on those two days. Raffle items will range from sports memorabilia to travel packages, local restaurant gift certificates and gift baskets.
Jennifer Orzechowski, Uno Chicago Grill’ regional marketing manager, is excited to be a part of the event. “It is our pleasure and honor to be working in partnership on such a wonderful event,” she says. “Coming together to bring happiness to a group of special athletes is a humbling experience. Uno, Special Olympics and the students of the sport management class at Syracuse University have all come together to raise money to give these athletes a chance to shine and compete.”
“This is a great experience for our students to integrate the material they have learned throughout the semester with a great cause,” says Gina Pauline, assistant professor in the Department of Sport Management, who teaches SPM 324. “We are very proud to have partnered with these remarkable organizations.”
Last year, 2,200 athletes and coaches in the Central Region of New York participated in one or more of the 22 Olympic-style sports offered in the area. Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Serving more than 2.5 million children and adults with intellectual disabilities in more than 180 countries, Special Olympics has created a model community that celebrates people’s diverse gifts. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy and friendship.
