Social Workers United, a student organization in the Syracuse University College of Human Ecology’s School of Social Work, will recognize Hope Wallis, former director of the InterReligious Council of Central New York’s Refugee Resettlement Program, as its 2010 Annual Social Justice Award winner on Tuesday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Panasci Lounge in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center.
The recognition event is free and open to the public.
This annual award, which was first given in 1980, recognizes a person who reflects the values of social justice in his or her professional and personal life. The award is presented in honor of the late professor Daniel Rubenstein, a former faculty member in the School of Social Work, and his late wife, Mary Lou, a former school social worker.
Wallis has dedicated her life to social justice, helping hundreds of refugee families settle in Central New York and continuously working to further human rights for the oppressed. She currently works with refugees in the Syracuse City School District.
As part of this year’s event, Social Workers United has invited several former award recipients to attend the ceremony, including Ednita Wright, Jeffrey Ambers and Jerome Hall.
