Scott Anger, director of video for the Los Angeles Times, will visit Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Wednesday, March 31, speaking about video for the Web and strategies for increasing production value at 7 p.m. in Room 101, Newhouse 1. His talk is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
Anger is a multimedia journalist, filmmaker and online video strategist. He is currently on a one-year sabbatical from his position at the LA Times, where he supervises a staff of five video journalists and oversees video strategy and content.
He also works with news organizations such as the BBC, Channel 4 (Sweden), ChannelNews Asia (Singapore), CNN and Oxygen, and with newspaper journalists through the National Press Photographers Association workshops, teaching visual storytelling, shooting techniques and editing, and providing guidance on multimedia strategies in the areas of production, promotion and distribution.
As a photojournalist for 15 years, he worked on assignment for a number of national and international publications while living in the United States and abroad. In the mid-1990s, he combined audio with photography and produced stories for National Public Radio, the BBC and Voice of America (VOA). From 1998-2000, he served as VOA’s bureau chief in Islamabad, covering Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia. In 1999, he opened and operated one of only five news bureaus under the strict Taliban regime in Kabul.
Since 2001, his work has focused on long-form documentary filmmaking for broadcast and theatrical release, most appearing on PBS’ “Frontline” series.
He has worked on such films as “Obama’s War” (cinematographer); “Life in Limbo” (co-producer/director of photography); “Witness to a Secret War” (co-producer/director of photography); “Budapest to Berlin: on the road with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra” (director of photography); “Greensboro: Closer to the Truth” (director of photography); “Return of the Taliban” (co-producer and director of photography); and “Home Front” (director of photography).
