Tuesday, Dec. 21, marks the 22nd anniversary of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and the loss of 270 individuals, including 35 Syracuse University students returning from a semester abroad in London and Florence. The plane exploded in the skies over Lockerbie, Scotland at 2:03 p.m., Eastern time on Dec. 21, 1988.
The chaplains of Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel will conduct a University Service of Remembrance on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 2:03 p.m. in the chapel’s Noble Room. The names of each of the 35 student victims and of a Clay couple who died in the crash, Glenn and Paula Alderman Bouckley, will be read. Members of the SU and greater Syracuse communities are welcome to attend the service.
Following the service, those in attendance will proceed to the Place of Remembrance, located in front of the Hall of Languages, where a candle will be placed on the Wall of Remembrance and a brief memorial statement will be offered by Hendricks Chapel Dean Tiffany Steinwert. The Crouse Chimes will sound 35 times in honor of the 35 SU students lost on the flight.
The Chaplain’s Council of Hendricks Chapel holds the memorial service each Dec. 21 at 2:03 p.m., the exact time and date of the crash of Flight 103 in 1988.
A service will also be held on Dec. 21 at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, D.C., where representatives from SU will be in attendance.
