Jim Weiss ’86, chairman, CEO and founder of Weisscomm Group, will visit Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications on Tuesday, Nov. 2. He will speak on “The Age of Integrated Communications” at 6 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots. Weiss, who was recently named to PRWeek’s “Power List 2010” and inducted into the Arthur Page Society, is a graduate of the Newhouse School’s public relations program. He is a senior corporate communications counselor with nearly 25 years of experience in strategic media and investor relations, and marketing communications focused in the healthcare, medical device, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and life sciences industries.
He has been involved in nearly every aspect of corporate communications, including investor relations, annual report writing and design, crisis communications, U.S. and international media relations, government affairs, product marketing communications, collateral/press material development, web site design and content development, marketing and promotion, professional relations, symposia development and coordination, hospital PR department liaison, third-party advocacy group liaison, media and presentation training, direct-to-consumer advertising, product placement and celebrity endorsements.
Before starting his own firm, Weiss was director of corporate communications and investor relations at medical device start-up Heartport. Prior to Heartport, he was director of worldwide product communications at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc. (now Aventis). Before that, he was at Genentech, coordinating communications on behalf of its lead products.
Prior to joining Genentech, Weiss worked at some of the world’s leading public relations agencies, including GTFH Public Relations; Hill & Knowlton; and Ketchum, developing, supervising and implementing strategic public relations programs for such clients as Novartis, Procter & Gamble, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., Pfizer, SmithKline Beecham and DuPont.
