“Tesoros del Pueblo” (Treasures of the People: The Folk Art of Mexico), an exhibition featuring the collection of Alejandro Garcia that debuted in January, will close at the Community Folk Art Center (CFAC) on Wednesday, May 5, from 7-9 p.m. with a Cinco de Mayo program sponsored by La Casita Cultural Center Project.
Held at the CFAC gallery, 805 E. Genesee St., the program will feature traditional Mexican food catered by Ponchitos Taqueria; a salute to Garcia, professor of social work in Syracuse University’s College of Human Ecology; a brief folk dance training session; and a musical performance by Radio Jarocho, a New York City-based group that promotes the Son and Fandango rhythms from southern Veracruz, Mexico.
The Cinco de Mayo celebration brings to an end a series of events held at the CFAC gallery and on the SU campus in conjunction with the exhibition, including film screenings, art workshops and speakers.
La Casita Cultural Center Project is an initiative committed to facilitating communication, collaboration and exchange between SU and Latino residents of Syracuse, as well as to enhancing the visibility of the Hispanic heritage of Central New York. La Casita is one of 19 Chancellor’s Leadership Projects.
CFAC is a unit of the Department of African American Studies in SU’s College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Coalition of Museum and Art Centers. The “Tesoros del Pueblo” exhibition is sponsored in part by the Office of the Chancellor at SU, Garcia, the New York State Council on the Arts, WAER FM 88.3 and the Cultural Resources Council.
