The 2010 Fall Eastern Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematics Society takes place at Syracuse University Oct. 2-3. The College of Arts and Sciences and its Department of Mathematics will host the two-day event, which takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at various locations across campus, including the Syracuse University College of Law, the Hall of Languages and Stolkin Auditorium in the Physics Building.
The event includes 15 special sessions, two contributed paper sessions and four plenary talks by prominent mathematicians. Three hundred participants will attend the event, enabling mathematicians the opportunity to meet people inside and outside their fields of study.
“It allows mathematicians in our regions to meet and communicate with each other,” says Gene Poletsky, chairperson for the Department of Mathematics. “It informs them of achievements in other areas of mathematics. The abstracts from the prestigious event are published by the AMS and are considered as publications.”
While speakers come from across the country, several SU faculty are participating in the event, including professors Graham Leuschke and Claudia Miller, who will hold a special session on commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Professors Jack Graver and Mark Watkins will address graphs embedded in surfaces and their symmetries.
The AMS holds eight sectional meetings annually. Each meeting runs for two days, with four invited addresses, multiple short courses, mini-courses, tutorials, exhibits, social events, and networking and employment opportunities. The AMS was founded in 1888 to promote mathematical research, education and scholarship and has more than 30,000 members.
