In keeping with its strong traditions and in celebration of its 60th year of publication, Syracuse Law Review will host its annual Law Review Banquet today and honor Robert E. Dineen Jr. L’66 with its Law Review Alumni Achievement Award. Dineen is a retired partner from Shearman & Sterling in New York.
“The Law Review is humbled to honor Robert E. Dineen Jr. as its Alumni Achievement Award winner. Mr. Dineen’s career accomplishments and record of service to the College of Law make him the ideal recipient of this award,” says third-year law student Edward Townsend, who is also editor in chief. “The staff of Volume 60 has worked tirelessly to put out timely and exciting books featuring first-rate authors. Our third issue in Volume 60 focused on a myriad of issues surrounding the current financial crisis, and was accompanied by a widely attended April 17 symposium, “‘Law and the Financial Crisis: Economic Regulation During Turbulent Times.’”
Dineen has extensive experience in public finance transactions, principally for companies involved in the oil and gas and pipeline business and for foreign and sovereign issuers in Canada and Latin America. He is also a specialist in U.S. and international private banking and financial transactions, including equipment and project financing.
Dineen began his tenure in the New York office of Shearman & Sterling in 1966 as an associate. He was made a partner in 1974, then became a senior partner, and continued in this position until 2005. He was of counsel to the firm from 2005 through 2008, when he retired. During his tenure, he led several of Shearman & Sterling’s corporate groups, including groups responsible for the firm’s work in Latin America and Asia and its project finance work worldwide.
He earned a bachelor’s degree at Brown University and a juris doctor degree cum laude at Syracuse University College of Law. He was editor of the Syracuse Law Review and was selected to Order of the Coif and the Justinian Honor Society.
Dineen currently serves as secretary on the SU College of Law Board of Advisors and is a member of its executive committee. He also serves as a trustee for Syracuse University.
Now in its 60th year, Syracuse Law Review is the College of Law’s most prestigious student-run publication. Each year, it publishes some of the nation’s most respected authors in four books.
