Sunday, April 18, will mark the start of a new beginning for a Syracuse-area family when their new home is dedicated by the SU/SUNY-ESF chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The third home built by the student organization is located at 205 Eliot St. and took eight months to build.
It was constructed by about 150 Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry students. The project began in August 2009, with first-year students participating in Habitat’s “Build Your First Year Experience,” and continued through this spring. Each weekend, teams of 8-10 student volunteers visited the site to continue construction until its completion. The family will move into the house about a month following the dedication. The dedication ceremony begins at 2 p.m. Sunday.
“We have recognized the need for affordable housing here in Syracuse, and, to be frank, we were tired of simply talking about it and being unable to take action,” says Justin Cole, an SU junior and executive director of the SU/SUNY-ESF chapter of Habitat for Humanity. “Why do we do it? Amidst all of the homework and stress of college life, we want to show people that if college kids can do it, then you can, too.”
In addition to the countless hours dedicated to constructing the 100 percent energy efficient house, Habitat students raised $60,000 to fund it. More than 200 students participated in Shack-A-Thon, Habitat’s largest fundraising event, which raises $12,000 annually and goes directly to the building project. Shack-A-Thon participants built, decorated and slept in shacks on the SU Quad for two nights to bring attention to the need for quality, affordable housing. The group is already planning its next project on Gifford Street and will break ground on it this August.
SU/SUNY-ESF Habitat for Humanity is a united group of SU and SUNY-ESF students who are committed to providing decent, affordable housing through house sponsorship, building projects and alternative break building trips. The chapter was established in 1991.
