Frank Bisignano, chief administrative officer for JPMorgan Chase & Co. and a member of the firm’s operating committee and executive committee, will be awarded Syracuse University’s prestigious Chancellor’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement during a ceremony on Thursday, March 4, at the Morgan Library in New York City.
The Chancellor’s Medal is given to individuals in honor of their extraordinary contributions to the University and to their areas of expertise and/or to the community, recognizing qualities to which the University urges SU students to aspire.
Previous honorees include U.S. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. ; “The Syracuse Eight”; renowned acting and activist couple Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis; Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shirin Ebadi; the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan; the late, eminent American composer Aaron Copland; The New Yorker magazine columnist and best-selling author Kenneth Auletta; and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala.
Bisignano is being recognized for his visionary leadership in forging an innovative form of university-private sector partnership represented by the SU-JPMorgan Chase collaboration, which yields not only dramatically enhanced opportunities for the students and faculty of the University and for the corporation, but for the public good.
“Frank Bisignano is a key partner in Syracuse University’s signature success today as we catalyze faculty research and creativity that matter and create optimal learning environments for our students to prepare for the world, in the world,” says SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor. “His vision, leadership and partnership are helping us set a precedent for the breadth and depth of university-industry collaboration that at the same time serves the public good. The Chancellor’s Medal is the perfect means for us to recognize and thank Frank for his extraordinary impact.”
In June 2007, Syracuse University and JPMorgan Chase & Co. established an innovative corporate-university collaboration and joint venture. The purpose of the collaboration is to bridge the gap between what students learn in academia and applying that knowledge in global technology environments.
University faculty and bank employees jointly developed a new Global Enterprise Technology (GET) minor for the University and conducted applied research projects with students in areas such as cybersecurity and risk management. JPMorgan Chase executives enhance the curriculum via guest lectures and close collaboration with SU’s new Center for Information Security and Assurance Technology. Hundreds of students are enrolled in courses within the collaboration’s minor, and interest has been growing every semester since its inception. SU opened the doors to its on-campus JPMorgan Chase Technology Center last fall.
As chief administrative officer for the firm, Bisignano oversees Technology, Operations, Real Estate, Procurement, Human Resources, and General Services across all of JPMorgan Chase’s businesses in more than 50 countries.
Prior to joining JPMorgan Chase, Bisignano was the CEO for Citigroup’s Global Transaction Services business, which generated revenue of $6 billion and after tax profit of $1.4 billion. He was also a member of Citigroup’s management committee and operating committee. Before being named CEO of GTS in 2002, Bisignano was the chief administrative officer of Citigroup’s Global Corporate and Investment Banking Group (GCIB), while also serving as deputy head of Operations and Technology for all of Citigroup from 2000-03.
Prior to joining Smith Barney in 1994, Bisignano was executive vice president and chief consumer lending officer at First Fidelity Bancorporation. He was a senior vice president at Shearson Lehman Brothers from 1986-90.
Bisignano serves on the boards of the nonprofit organizations NPower New York, PENCIL, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, Alliance for Downtown New York and as a trustee for The Battery Conservancy and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
