The Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at Syracuse University will host a daylong workshop on the Japanese government’s consideration of a new disability civil rights law Feb. 18 at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. This first of its kind meeting, as part of a workshop series at BBI’s new Los Angeles base, examines disability law and policy in Japan and the United States with discussion of comparative strengths and challenges.
The panels will be on disability in Japan, developments in the United States and comparative approaches. In addition to BBI and the Japanese government’s Committee on Disability Law Development, the event is sponsored by the Global Partnership for Disability Development (GPDD), Hokusei Gakuen University in Hokkaido, Japan, and Loyola Law School.
The workshop builds on the collaboration between BBI and the Committee on Disability Law. Professor Jun Nakagawa, of Hokusei Gakuen University in Hokkaido, is chair of the Japanese Committee. BBI Chairman Peter Blanck, who recently lectured throughout Japan, notes this event “will be an important collaborative discussion on the rights of persons with disabilities in Japan and the U.S.”
BBI is dedicated to 21st-century solutions for people with disabilities worldwide. With staff of more than 60 and offices in Syracuse, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles and Tel Aviv, BBI engages in projects on civil rights, entrepreneurship, universal design, employment and economic advancement, technology innovation and attitudes about disability in traditional and new media.
