In February, the Office of Engagement Programs in Syracuse University's Hendricks Chapel and the Northside Collaboratory will launch smART-an after-school arts program that will engage middle school students in a variety of artistic pursuits.
Organizers are currently searching for student mentors who can work with the middle school students on four modules-photography and creative writing; sculpture; material arts and printmaking; and assembly required (building things). Students participating in each module will gather once a week for nine weeks, from Feb. 9-April 16, from 3-5:30 p.m. at Our Northside Community Gallery, 745 N. Salina St.
Students' work will be showcased at the Syracuse University MayFest on April 21. A subsequent exhibition will be held at Our Northside Community Gallery from April 24-May 8.
Those interested in becoming mentors should contact Robbi Farschman, director of the Office of Engagement Programs, at (315) 443-1254 or rfarschm@syr.edu, or Maarten Jacobs, project coordinator of the Northside Collaboratory, at (315) 473- 0952, ext. 308, or maarten@assisicenter.org.
