Saras Sarasvathy, a pioneer and leader in the field of entrepreneurship and ethics, and associate professor of business administration in the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, has been named the 2008 Falcone Distinguished Scholar in Entrepreneurship by the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. Sarasvathy will be sharing her knowledge of the field in a lecture titled "Made as Well as Found: Researching Entrepreneurship as a Science of the Artificial" on Friday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. in Room 102 of the Whitman School building.
Sarasvathy is a leading scholar on the cognitive basis for high-performance entrepreneurship and is author of "Effectuation: Elements of Entrepreneurial Expertise" (Edward Elgar Publishing Inc., 2008), a widely acclaimed framework for understanding the creation and growth of new organizations and markets. Sarasvathy has also developed several cases and other instructional materials to teach effectuation. A new textbook, along with a detailed instructor's manual, is currently in the works.
Sarasvathy holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Bombay and a master's degree and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University. Her thesis on entrepreneurial expertise was supervised by Herbert Simon, the 1978 Nobel laureate in economics. Before joining Darden, Sarasvathy was on the faculty of the University of Washington and the University of Maryland. Prior to joining academia, she was part of the founding team in five entrepreneurial ventures.
The Falcone Distinguished Scholar in Entrepreneurship is awarded annually by the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship in the Whitman School. Past recipients include Jeffrey Covin and Dean Shepherd from Indiana University, and Duane Ireland and Michael Hitt from Texas A&M.
