Syracuse University’s reaccreditation report from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education has been posted online at http://middlestates.syr.edu/.
The highly positive decennial assessment of the University was composed by a distinguished panel of evaluators led by Tufts University President Lawrence Bacow following a formal, three-day site visit to campus during spring 2008. The reviewers employed strong terms to articulate their findings about the University’s academic climate, stating, “The evaluation team found at Syracuse University a community of remarkably engaged teachers, scholars and students.”
The team also underlined the impact that SU is having on higher education generally: “What is happening at Syracuse University is especially important and timely in light of the broad public concerns about how universities can best respond to the complex needs of contemporary society.”
The report’s conclusion reflects the strength of the evaluators’ judgment that the University is being well served by the focus it finds in pursuit of its vision, Scholarship in Action:
“The Middle States Commission on Higher Education defines a university as ‘a community dedicated to the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge, to the study and clarification of values and to the advancement of the society it serves.’ We would be hard pressed to come up with a better summary of what we found at Syracuse University. Faculty, administrators and students displayed a consistently high commitment to academic excellence, to expanding access to higher education, to accountability in operations and to amplifying the impact of their work on the world.”
