As the Syracuse University Omicron Alumni Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society of nursing, prepares for its 50th anniversary, it welcomes the organization's national president to speak at its induction ceremony of new members on June 8. The visit to SU by Carol Huston marks the first time since the Omicron Alumni Chapter was chartered in 1959 that the organization's national president has come to campus.
Huston is a professor at the School of Nursing at the California State University, Chico (CSUC), with more than three decades of hands-on patient care and administrative experience. A frequent contributor to nursing journals and publications, she has authored or co-authored numerous books and educational texts, including "Professional Issues in Nursing" (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005) and "Leadership Roles and Management Functions in Nursing: Theory and Application" (Lippincostt Williams & Wilkins, 1995).
"The Omicron Alumni Chapter is honored to recognize the leaders in the Syracuse community of nurses and celebrate their hard work and dedication," says Chris Welker, president of the Omicron Alumni Chapter. "It is truly an honor to be a member of this organization."
In addition to special remarks provided by Huston, the induction ceremony will honor 15 leaders in the local nursing community. The new inductees work in all of the large health care institutions in Syracuse -- hospitals, home care and long-term care agencies, schools and schools of nursing. As a group, they average 20 to 30 years in nursing. They are caregivers who work as clinical educators, staff educators, administrators, managers and nurse practitioners, and strive to improve the health of their community.
The June 8 event will begin at 2 p.m. in the Hall of Languages on the SU campus. It is free and open to the public, with free parking available in the Q1 lot. For more information about the event or Sigma Theta Tau International, contact Elizabeth Essman at eressman@syr.edu.
Sigma Theta Tau International provides leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research to enhance the health of all people. The organization is supportive of the learning and professional development of its members who strive to improve nursing care worldwide. The Omicron Alumni Chapter has about 300 active members and is the 14th chapter of 463 chapters worldwide.
