Tandameshia Hastings, International relations and public relations, class of 2012, Memphis, TN
I prayed about what school to go to and Syracuse was my answer. Once I received my acceptance letter from Syracuse I was excited by everything I read online about SU: information about my major, diversity, sororities, etc. I found everything I was looking for here at Syracuse. God placed me here for a reason. I know that my purpose of being here is to grow as an individual, inspiring others and being inspired by them in return.
Why did you choose SU?
I chose SU because God told me to come here. I prayed for God to guide me to an institution where I would be engaged in a diverse setting, where I would be challenged mentally, and be molded into a well-rounded individual. Also, I chose to apply to SU because it was a change of scenery. As a native of Memphis, Tennessee, I wanted to explore a world beyond my borders. As an international relations major, I wanted to learn about the world and prepare myself for an intense traveling career. I also wanted to acquire a greater sense of independence, developing my ability to govern my life before I enter the “real” world.
What has been your most meaningful experience so far?
Getting involved in programs within the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). OMA’s WellsLink Leadership program has fostered my growth as an individual and has encouraged me to start initiatives on issues that concern me, such as eliminating social barriers that exist between students on campus. OMA’s website introduced me to Verbal Blend, a poetry and spoken word program. In Verbal Blend, I gained the courage to share many of my deepest thoughts and philosophies through my poetry. The critiques I received from fellow poets helped me explore my perspective on life, and the way in which I typically evaluate the events of life through a meditative, philosophical, and politically creative lens.
What's the secret of your success at SU?
My secret to success at SU includes prayer, self-discipline, good time management skills, and setting realistic goals. I also try to remain optimistic about surpassing my own expectations of myself. These strategies guided me through my high school career and are now also paving the way to success in my college career.
How have you changed since you have been here?
I have thrived and bloomed in all of my endeavors thanks to supporting advisors, faculty, peer mentors, academic mentors, and friends. Each person I have encountered here at Syracuse has enlightened me to some degree and has spurred me to reflect on my weaknesses and strengths. As a result, I strive to improve on my weaknesses and continue to work on my strengths. I have broken out of my shell more since I have been at SU and have asserted myself in situations that I usually would not have if I were at home.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
After graduation I will attend graduate school and acquire a master of science degree in foreign service. I would then seek employment in the State Department as a foreign affairs officer. I am currently applying for internships that will give me some field experience before I graduate from college. Also, I am taking advantage of opportunities here on campus to prepare for graduate school. I wish to become intertwined in the world of politics (specifically China) and culture, develop as an individual, and inspire others to do the same. I also hope to eliminate barriers that prevent countries from achieving a shared understanding and perspective.
