The Syracuse University Alumni Association Board of Directors is a forty-four member board comprised of the following:
President (two-year term)
Two Vice Presidents (two-year term, one position filled each year)
President-Elect or Past President
(one-year term, rotating. President-Elect automatically assumes
Presidency the following year)
Secretary (appointed by the Chancellor)
Treasurer (appointed by the Chancellor)
Alumni Office liaison (appointed by the Chancellor)
Sixteen general alumni members
(two-year term, eight elected each year)
One international alumni member (two-year term)
Four currently enrolled students
Three representatives of Alumni Clubs
One young alumni representative
Two alumni members of the Athletic Policy Board
Up to ten honorary members (may serve up to two one-year terms)
Six alumni members of the Board of Trustees (ex-officio)
Board Member Qualifications
Members of the SU Alumni Association Board of Directors are elected based on demonstrated involvement and commitment to Syracuse University. Board members are elected to serve a two-year term, and are eligible for a second two-year term.
1. Strong leadership qualities, with demonstrated support for Syracuse University, including:
acting as ambassador for student recruitment
acting as ambassador for the schools and colleges
understanding the relationship between the Alumni Association, the Alumni Relations Office and the Development Office and Development's goals and campaigns
2. Ability and willingness to commit to a two-year term, to be involved and participate in:
one on-campus meeting a year in the fall
one off-campus meeting a year in the spring, in NYC or Washington, DC
a Board committee and in regular committee meetings by conference call
assignments as they come up in their area of expertise
the Alumni Club liaison program
3. Add to the diversity of the current Board in the following areas: school/college degree, professional experience, race, gender, and geographic location.
In accepting the appointment, an individual agrees to fulfill the following requirements and responsibilities:
Attend and participate in all scheduled Board meetings.
Serve actively on Alumni Board and Alumni Association committees.
Foster a spirit of loyalty and fraternity among graduates, former students, and friends of Syracuse University.
Make a financial commitment to support program areas of interest.
Interact with the Office of Alumni Relations to represent the interests of all alumni of Syracuse University.
Athletic Policy Board
Two Athletic Policy Board members are elected to serve a two-year term. They are full voting members of the Alumni Board and must demonstrate the qualifications set out above; in addition they must:
· Attend monthly meetings of the Athletic Policy Board.
· Demonstrate interest and knowledge of athletic programs and sensitivity to NCAA rules and regulations.
· Possess strong leadership qualities, with demonstrated support in the life of Syracuse University
Committees
The committee structure of the Alumni Association Board is established to support the Office of Alumni Relations' (OAR) organizational responsibilities and functions. To ensure communication between the Board and OAR, a representative from OAR serves as an ex-officio member on each Board committee.
The Executive Committee is comprised of the officers and committee chairs of the Alumni Association Board and is responsible for agendas, finances, bylaws, long-range planning, Board performance assessment, and Board training.
Board members are assigned to the following committees based on their areas of expertise and/or interests:
The On-Campus Programs Committee advises and supports the staff of On-Campus Programs in planning and evaluating networking, leadership, and social opportunities for alumni, young alumni and students to encourage and enable them to develop and maintain a lifelong connection with Syracuse University and their fellow alumni.
The Off-Campus Programs Committee advises and supports the staff of Off-Campus Programs in matters dealing with alumni club governance, activities, and communications, to ensure that the clubs are active and supporting the goals of the University, the alumni and the students. It also assists in the development and evaluation of other engagement opportunities for alumni around the country, with the goal of promoting the mission and vision of Syracuse and enhancing the ties of alumni to their alma mater.
The Communications Committee works with OAR staff to develop and enhance the ways in which OAR and SUAA communicate with alumni and alumni clubs around the country and across the world.
The Nominating Committee is responsible for screening applicants for Board membership and for Board Officer positions and recommends a slate of members and officers to be elected by the membership of the Alumni Association. The Awards Committee is responsible for reviewing nominations for the various awards given annually by the Alumni Association, including the Outstanding Alumni of the Year, Outstanding Young Alumni of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and the Eggers Senior Alumni Awards, and selecting the recipients.
It also reviews nominations for the George Arents Pioneer Medal, the University’s highest award to its alumni, and recommends a slate of award winners to the Chancellor and Board of Trustees for their approval.
