Syracuse University

Living in central New York

Syracuse and the surrounding communities may be considered the “heart of New York” with rich history in the Erie Canal and the Underground Railroad.  Syracuse is located near Seneca Falls: the home of the Women’s Rights Movement, as well as the Onondaga and Oneida Nations.  Located in the geographic center of New York State, it is a scenic treasure amid rolling hills, tranquil lakes and bountiful vineyards.

Our changing seasons allow for colorful autumns, and winter snows transform our gently rolling hills into a perfect playground for winter sports enthusiasts. Summer activities include outdoor arts and crafts expositions, a farmers’ market, the Great New York State Fair, as well as boating and water sports at local beaches.  Our strategic location at the crossroads of New York State puts us within only five hours of nearly every major eastern metropolitan area, including New York City, Boston, Toronto, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia (from www.syracusechamber.com).

Syracuse University plays a key role in the community by providing public service and educational opportunities.   Chancellor Nancy Cantor has been instrumental in connecting the University with the surrounding community through partnerships with the Syracuse City School District, the downtown area, and the Southside Initiative, to name a few.

In order to tap into the creative energy and build stronger relationships among the people, businesses, and cultural institutions of Syracuse, Chancellor Cantor recently announced a community-wide project to highlight the uniqueness of the city: the Connective Corridor.

Connective Corridor: Home to the University community, museums, theaters, and galleries, it includes Armory Square, a 19th century warehouse district transformed into a vibrant center for dining, retail and entertainment.  It is home to the central business district for Central New York.  And, it is a central hub for students, residents, and visitors traveling across the region. Through the design and cultural activities along its route, the Connective Corridor will serve as a destination for those seeking a safe and enjoyable urban experience.

Living in Downtown: Downtown Syracuse offers additional options in living.  Condominiums, townhouses, and lofts are available in such areas as historic Franklin Square, Plum Court, Center Armory, and Mission Landing.

Real Estate Services: Syracuse University maintains a "Home for Sale by Owner" listing. These are properties in the East Neighborhood or Outer Comstock Neighborhood owned by an SU faculty or staff member and not listed with a realtor. Please contact the University’s Real Estate Services Office at 315-443-2104 for more information.

The Greater Syracuse Association of Realtors maintains a multiple listing service of homes available for sale through a real estate broker in the Syracuse area which includes the neighborhoods eligible for the Guaranteed Mortgage Program. Please visit their website at www.cnyrealtor.com for further information.

Guaranteed Mortgage Program:  In cooperation with participating financial institutions, the University has established a Guaranteed Mortgage Program to assist the faculty and staff in purchasing single or two family homes in these target neighborhoods.
